Finalist for DoD "Best Ideas"
The Inspect Repair Preparation Cell (IRPC) team (American GFM, Assembly Guidance, Manufacturing Resources, Inc. and Steinbichler) has been selected as one of six finalists for the 2010 DoD maintenance "Best Ideas" award. The IRPC program is funded by the National Center for Manufacturing Sciences. The IRPC team has been addressing composite maintenance issues with an integrated approach which allows composite repairs to be performed with the speed and accuracy of current manufacturing techniques. The IRPC has the capability to create a digital model of the part being repaired. The digital model is used to drive multiple modes of automated NDI. NDI data is overlaid on the part surface for analysis. The overlaid NDI data can also be projected directly on to the part surface to show suspect areas or substructure. AGFM is in the process of introducing a portable, NC scarfing machine. The Assembly Guidance LASERGUIDE and APV systems will be used to guide, verify and document correct repair. All repairs performed with the IRPC will generate comprehensive, traceable documentation for future reference and planning. The winner would be determined at DoD Maintenance Symposium, following presentations by the six finalists. Please visit the IRPC team in booths 132-134.
