Recent enhancements in Automatic Ply Verification (APV) and laser projection enable automatic detection of many, but not all, cases of FOD presence during hand layup of composites. These in-process detectors allow FOD problems to be resolved during layup, when removal of FOD can be accomplished at minimal cost. This paper documents the history, operation, limitations and future enhancements of FOD detection with APV and Aimed Vision.
